See lessonsOak Creek isn’t just water moving through a canyon — it’s the backbone of a riparian ecosystem. Cottonwoods, insects, birds and trout all depend on that same thread of green cutting through the red rock, and seeing how those pieces connect changes how you see the whole canyon.
Oak Creek Canyon cuts through hundreds of millions of years of exposed rock, layered like a timeline you can touch. The same forces of water, wind and uplift that carved the canyon are still reshaping it today — once you can read the layers, the landscape starts to tell its own story.
Long before Sedona was a destination, Indigenous peoples lived, farmed and traveled through this canyon, leaving dwellings, pottery and rock art scattered through the area. Field School covers what’s known about that history, and how to treat these places with the respect they deserve.
Oak Creek supports a surprising range of life for a desert canyon — native and wild trout in the water, resident and migratory birds overhead, and plant life that shifts dramatically from the creek bed to the canyon rim. You’ll learn to spot and understand the species that define this place.
